It’s no secret that people are increasingly concerned about the environmental responsibility of their actions. We try to conserve water, we seek out food grown by sustainable practices, and now, many of us try to take vacations that have smaller carbon footprints. It’s not always easy to find eco-friendly vacation options, but there are some excellent choices out there. If you’re considering a vacation to Fiji’s incredible Ono Island, you’ll be happy to know that the Mai Dive Astrolabe Reef Resort is one of the most eco-friendly accommodations in the region.
Environmental responsibility is something we take very seriously. We have a tremendous respect for the beautiful Earth and everything it gives us, from our lush tropical surroundings to the variety of plant life we grow in its soil. At Mai Dive, our commitment to be eco-friendly informs everything we do, including our commitment to provide the best possible service to our guests. Here’s how we do it.
Green Accommodations Every Day
The Mai Dive Astrolabe Reef Resort is a low key, fully sustainable resort that is still able to offer well-appointed accommodations and all the creature comforts our guests want. We’re energy efficient: rather than burn fossil fuels, the electricity at the resort comes from our excellent solar power system. We’re able to generate clean energy thanks to the light given off by the bright tropical sun.
We’re also a resort that’s in harmony with the local Ono Island culture and its people. In fact, many of the individuals who work at Mai Dive are Fijians from Ono Island. This is their home; they love this island in the South Pacific, and they are committed to protecting it and keeping it pristine. What’s more, they’re happy to share their knowledge of the island with guests, and that translates to a truer and more authentic vacation experience for you.
Green Bures and Bungalows
Even the structures at Mai Dive are eco-friendly. Our comfortable bures (or small huts) and bungalows are made from locally sourced wood and constructed by local builders. They’re not sprawling hotel suites with lots of wasted space and high tech screens and gadgets — they’re cozy and comfortable, with plenty of space for you and your travel companions, without the excess.
Our guests have access to everything they need for a comfortable vacation without negatively impacting the surrounding land and water. Amenities include mosquito nets over the beds for a restful night’s sleep, lights and fans throughout our rooms, private bathrooms, and hot showers.
Natural and Organic Cuisine
At Mai Dive, another way in which we protect the environment is our food. Three meals a day are included in the price of your stay, and we are able to offer our guests a real taste of the island with outstanding dishes prepared by our Fijian chefs. The ingredients are all locally sourced and seasonal; guests eat what’s growing that season, and menus change with the island’s growing cycle. It’s not only a more sustainable way of eating, but it’s a more delicious way of eating. Thanks to the incredibly short period of time from soil to plate, our food tastes fresher and better.
Additionally, no chemical sprays or fertilizers are used in the growing or harvesting of food on the island. The result is a local, naturally grown cuisine with vibrant colors and bright flavors that our guests love. Finally, when you’re thirsty, there’s a natural spring on site for fresh, clean water.
